Three things define the emo style: drooping bangs in the front, spiky strands of hair in the back (usually stiffened with gel), and dark coloration. It needs long hair in the front to work. If you have recent gotten your forelocks shortened, you should just wait till you grow back three or four inches before you go emo. The spikes in the back of the head are where you have the least worries. You can do anything there, even shave the back of your scalp, and still have an emo. Color is also flexible, but it can be controversial. Many stylists will not do blonde emos, unless they are platinum.
